Sedation & Happy Gas

Sleep Dentistry

Not every dentist in Sydney CBD offers a range of sedation options – so if you’re concerned about dental treatment you need done, it pays to ask the question about what alternatives are offered in regards to sedation and pain management. Often referred to as ‘sleep dentistry’ in Sydney, there are many ways we can help you feel relaxed throughout your next treatment.

Sedation and Happy Gas

If you’re avoiding visiting our practice because you’re anxious about dental treatment, then using nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as “happy gas”, or a deeper form of sedation, may be an option to help you relax.

Dr Cai and his team of dental professionals can offer you the simplest form of sedation, which will enable successful treatment to be given. For example, some of our patients respond well to nitrous oxide and oxygen (happy gas) while others cope better with a valium-type drug (oral sedation). Another option is to use I.V. sedation, where you are intravenously injected with drugs that relax your central nervous system, enabling treatment to be carried out whilst you still remain cognisant.

There are many methods of being sedated and Dr Cai and his team will discuss with you what treatment best suits you. Before sedation can be offered, a full medical history will be taken and we may liaise with your regular medical practitioner if necessary. In some cases, blood tests may he needed before an appointment is made.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation, also known as Relative Analgesia (RA), is administered through a nose mask making you feel warm and relaxed.

Oral Sedation

With oral sedation, you will be prescribed a medication that will make you drowsy and relaxed. This technique can also be used in conjunction with nitrous oxide for deeper sedation.

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation is a technique whereby drugs are injected until the desired effect is achieved. You normally remember very little but still co-operate during treatment, waking up relaxed and calm.
